This is a print of a small, original work. The subject is a lone live oak tree in the middle of a sugarcane field near Raceland, Louisiana. Most farmers will cut down large trees to make room for the crop they are planting, this farmer decided to keep the magnificent oak.

The original artwork was created using oil bars, oil pastels and colored pencils on primed Bristol board. If you would like to give this drawing/painting technique a try I recommend supplies from Blick Art.

Size of Pint: H: 6 inched X W: 12 inches
Printed on acid-free paper with archival inks.
Each print is signed and numbered.
Limited edition of 50.

MORE ABOUT THE ART

“I saw in Louisiana a live-oak growing / All alone stood it, and the moss hung down from the branches.” —Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass, 1860-61

More than 150 years after Whitman wrote those lines, the southern live oak still embodies the American ideal of individual resilience—a stoic figure standing tall. One of the country’s more whimsical-looking trees, the live oak is also one of the strongest. Indeed, it has saved the lives of thousands of people who have clung to its limbs during hurricanes. And these days scientists appreciate its extraordinary capacity for absorbing atmospheric carbon, a bonus in the era of climate change. READ MORE from this Smithsonian Magazine article.
